Safety Goal: to increase seat belt use for all vehicle occupants.
Benefits: Seat belts have proven to be effective in reducing injury and saving lives; however, seat belt usage in the United States is low (56% of the 31, 904 fatalities in the U.S. were unrestrained occupants) Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, January 12, 2005, 84th Annual Meeting Transportation Research Board presentation entitled Can Improvements Be Made in Automobile Seat-Belt Technology.
Benefits:
- SeatSentry®; detects seat occupancy status (empty or occupied)
- Communicates seat occupancy status to seat belt reminder system (SBR)
- Communicates the driver, front passenger, and rear passenger seat occupancy status to the seat belt reminder system (SBR)
- Cues: visual and/or audible (based on OEM vehicle specifications)
- Cost effective solution that can be integrated with other seat features
How it works: SeatSentry® using e-field technology, detects the seat occupancy status and communicates the status to the seat belt reminder system (SBR). The e-field technology consisting of a flexible sensor mat is installed in the seat back.
